My Perimenopause Story: Why Everything Suddenly Felt Impossible

The personal journey that ignited a passion for helping women navigate the complexities of midlife hormonal shifts.

(The short Version)

As a certified nutrition coach with 25+ years of experience, I thought I had health figured out. I'd helped countless clients transform their lives, guided my three children through their growing years, and built a life I loved in the mountains of British Columbia.

Then perimenopause arrived like an uninvited guest—and everything I thought I knew about my body became irrelevant overnight.

When Your Body Becomes a Stranger

The changes started subtly. A few extra pounds despite eating the same way. Energy that used to carry me through mountain hikes now barely lasted through morning coffee. But I pushed through, thinking it was just stress, just life.

Then came the night that changed everything.

After yet another sleepless night of drenching sweats, I found myself on my kitchen floor at 2 AM, sobbing uncontrollably. I'd gained 30 pounds despite following every "perfect" nutrition rule I knew. My once-loose pyjamas clung uncomfortably to this new, unfamiliar body. The woman who used to tackle mountain trails with enthusiasm could barely manage a shower.

My husband found me there and whispered:

"There's got to be a better way."

He was right. That breakdown became my breakthrough.

The Journey Back to Myself

What followed wasn't a quick fix or magical transformation. It was a slow, methodical process of understanding what my changing body actually needed. I had to relearn everything—not just about nutrition, but about how hormones affect metabolism, muscle mass, sleep, and mood.

I went back to the foundations I'd taught for years, but this time with a perimenopause lens:

  • How to fuel my body for sustained energy, not just weight loss.
  • Why protein became non-negotiable for maintaining muscle mass.
  • How strength training protected my bones and metabolism in ways cardio never could.
  • Why consistency mattered more than perfection when my energy was unpredictable.

Slowly but surely, the fog lifted. My energy returned. I felt like myself again—not the old me, but a stronger, wiser version who understood her body's new language.

Why I Share This Story

Today, four years later, I've guided hundreds of women through their own perimenopause journeys. I see the same confusion, frustration, and fear I once felt reflected in their eyes during our first calls.

But I also see their transformation when they realize they're not broken, they're not crazy, and they're definitely not alone.

That kitchen floor moment taught me something crucial: perimenopause isn't our decline—it's our awakening. It's the transition that forces us to become the fiercest advocates for our own health.

The Path Forward

If you're reading this while feeling lost in your own body, wondering if this is just your new normal, I want you to know—don't give up on yourself. Keep advocating for your health. Your most powerful chapter may very well be ahead of you.

I'm living proof that it's possible not just to survive these changes, but to thrive beyond them.

"Perimenopause isn't your decline—it's your awakening. Let's navigate it together with science, strategy, and fierce love."
